Lady Quilt

The first of a short series of  'Lady Quilts' is finished. These are all in brightest fuchsia pink and lime green.

One of the upper corners is a large square of lavender satin with a padded touch square in the center and an appliqued crochet piece from a collection of medallions and motifs someone gave me. Tactile in the extreme!

One of my favorites for texture: a wool square with velveteen flowers,
fleece leaves and satin ribbon stems.

A square of what I call 'lady print' flannel with grosgrain ribbons.
There is a foam bead in the center square to discover.

Button feature.

The button is on a length of cord that allows it to store in a deep slit pocket. Pulled out, it may be hooked with the loop or slipped into the little patch pocket.

Green fleece and pink felt high heels for fun.

Gold color machine embroidery, couched yarn, a row of curved stitching and two lines of couched embroidery floss. Great textures, interesting embellishing for a sold square.

This piece of quilt blocks fit into the space of two blocks of the quilt.
Carolina Lily pattern, it has flocked pieces:
the pink print and the yellow print have excellent texture.

The center square had a small drawstring bag attached.
Paracord ties are long enough to allow it to flatten, revealing the silk lining.
I almost omitted this feature but when I showed it to Suzanne she thought
it would make a fun item for busy hands.

Perhaps my favorite, a velveteen square has a column of shallow pockets, some ribbon loops and a prairie point in the style that Nancy Zieman teaches on her web site.

This quilt has 12" squares. There are enough 12" squares to make a second one, but I may slash them into smaller pieces for a different look. The next quilt has 8" squares. The various tactile items and embellishments are mostly done, ready to sew together.

This quilt is backed with pink flannel. Since there is no batting, these quilts do not require quilting to hold the batting in place. Minimal quilting makes for a softer quilt. There is enough straight line quilting to hold the lining in place and a little reinforcement where I think there might be stress, like under and around the drawstring bag.

The vintage Carolina Lily blocks were hand pieced, so I topstitched where the seam allowance turned back to make sure they didn't come apart before I assembled the top. Once the quilt was put together I stitched along the ditch a few times to hold the backing in place.

It Is a Carolina Lily

Correction: The Purple Bear Claw touch quilt actually has Carolina Lily blocks.

Vintage quilt blocks in the Lily pattern form the bottom corners. These quilts have no pattern and are one of a kind because of the nature of the fabrics and trims used.

A nine-patch, loosely interpreted as it has a series of patches of varying sizes across the top, sashed with a length of crocus color broadcloth which was also used to square up the Lily blocks, this quilt just grew.

The blocks on each side of the center row have inset pockets of lightweight yellow fabric. Purple tulips and a wide blue satin ribbon trim the inside edges past the pockets.

Vintage quilt blocks that otherwise would never be used and eventually be discarded when there's no one left with sentiment toward the maker.

The stylized Tiger Swallowtail is made of yellow linen. The satin rectangle eluded making square corners until reverse applique opened a hole for him in the yellow square. Lightly stuffed, it makes a very tactile toy. Faux fur below it offers a different texture and Prairie Points along the edge are more items to explore, their folds making tiny triangular pockets for a busy finger to seek out.

Trapunto roses offer a 3-D effect. The rose blocks are separated by a wide strip of satin ribbon and a satin ribbon loop.

The blue dotted strips are flat. The soft striped grey strips form shallow pockets.

A crochet medallion from among years of collected treasures.

Felt tulips with ribbon stems, lightly padding for texture makes them more touchable. Green satin ribbon taggies are vague reminders of bulb foliage or grass.

Hatch Plaid fleece in blue, lime, purple and white is the backing. The bear claw quilt blocks are heavily quilted because of their age and hand piecing. The rest of the quilt is stitched together at intervals in no particular pattern. There is no batting which keeps the quilt as light in weight as possible.

Touch Quilts Go to their New Home

I called Suzanne at the nursing home and made arrangements to take the first three lap quilts to their new place.

She said there are some residents that she thought might benefit from having one of these to play with. She will consult with someone else. I'll get back with her before I take more there.

It was busy there and I didn't linger to chat.

Umbrella Theme Lap Quilt

It's finally finished.

Colors in the backing are not quite true.

Front has diagonal quilting to indicate rain.
Umbrella has fabric ruching, navy with yellow edge.
Blue pocket has Velcro on flap.
Lime birds echo the fleece print, orange wings.

Flowers have varying textures. Darker pink and blue are silk, the pink print flowers are stitched for tactile effect. Couched green silk ribbon for stems.

Yellow umbrella is my favorite addition. Handle is green grosgrain ribbon, ruched at the crook of the handle. Ruching is my favorite embellishment. The umbrella is trimmed with fabric ruching. Varying widths and ribbons make all kinds of different trims with little effort except a little hand stitching prior to applying.

Elephant Walk

When I ordered off for fleece and flannel, a piece of elephant print velour was the best bargain I found. It was the only print of its kind and the only juvenile print that I bought.

I cut off a piece to use for backing for a future quilt and cut the rest into squares to alternate with other touch blocks. This quilt is backed with khaki colored flannel.

Shallow pocket for exploration.
Prairie Points in blue are among my favorite
trims. They can be explored from the open
side and have no raw edges.

A good view of the little elephants and my
applique elephant with ribbon ear.

Not a real pocket, just a corner to explore.

Ribbon loops

A real pocket on yellow fleece.

 Another look at the elephant.

The darker red square is fine-wale corduroy.
